The nursing shortage is hitting
healthcare all across the globe.
Here's what some countries need:
·Canada At least 10,000 nursing
grads are needed per yearby 2011,
compared with 5,000 now coming out
of nurse diploma and basic baccalaureate
programs.
·Chile Of 18,000 nurses in the country,
only 8,000 actively practice.
·Netherlands Shortage will climb
from 5,000 nurses in 2000 to 7,000
in 2002; acute needs are in community
nursing and elder care.
·Poland RNs grads are down to 3,000
per year. Ten years ago, more than
10,000 new RNs graduated annually.
·Switzerland It's short 3,000 generalist
RNs and has urgent need of specialist
nurses; numbers of new graduates
are down 36%, and ads for RNs have
increased 72%.
·United Kingdom Britain reports
some 22,000 full-time vacancies
in the National Health Service,
with 9,900 jobs going unfilled for
at least three months.
·United States Metropolitan hospitals
lack 33,000 to 50,000 nurses. About
half the nursing work force will
reach retirement age within 15 years,
and enrollment in nursing
schools has dipped. A 14% decline
in graduation from all types of
programs is documented; experts
say the number of nurses needed
will fall to nearly 20% below requirements
by 2020.
